Jiaxing Library was founded in 1904 which is one of the earliest public libraries in China. In 2003, the new Jiaxing library moved to its present premises, NO.339 Haiyantang Road, and the new location covers 1.5 hectares of land. Recently, the buildings for the storage of ancient rare books -- the second stage of the project is under construction, with 11358 square meters totally. The library’s location enjoys convenient transportation options with several bus lines within reach. The public is free to enter the library, and all of the public service areas are open. At present, Jiaxing library has formed its modern public library service system with urban-rural integration which consists of a central library, 2 district libraries, 11 town (community) libraries, 28 village libraries, 313 book-circulation stations, 6 24-hour self-service libraries, and one travelling library. From the public library service system to the library service union system, a government-oriented model with centralized management has guaranteed the public library service system to extend vertically. At the beginning of 2011, the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Finance of China sponsored a series of projects as demonstration projects of national public cultural service system. As one of the projects, the construction of an integrated public library service across urban and rural areas in Jiaxing was approved. Therefore, Jiaxing library was awarded series of honors of “Cultural Work Advanced Unit”, “Country-level Library”, “State-level Unit of Ancient Works Protection”, etc. o9?1QE7?8Kl7!9R
The library is open every day throughout the year and hosts 3 million visitors every year and more than 2 million books and periodicals for annual circulation. Jiaxing library is well equipped with automatic self-service devices for basic services. The “one-card-through” information system of the Jiaxing Central Library has achieved the full coverage of the three-tier network of city, district and town and community libraries, linking the city's nearly 50 libraries and more than 313 service stations. As a digital multi-media platform, Jiaxing Digital Library provides convenient and abundant long-distance information service for the public. The Library aims to satisfy the needs of multi-terminal and ubiquitous digital knowledge resources for 24 hours. Database visitor volume reaches 8 million every year and reader volume amounts to 7 hundred thousand above. Moreover, Jiaxing Library offers information and technology skills training services for disadvantaged groups to improve their ability to use computers, the Internet and digital resources, so as to turn itself into a shared space of knowledge and information. In order to advance multi-cultural understanding and communication, Jiaxing Library holds a wide variety of exhibitions, forums and lectures.
